EDUARDO SARABIA

A Los Angeles-born artist working in Guadalajara, Mexico, Eduardo Sarabia explores the complex cultural exchanges between Mexico and the United States and the multiple economies, formal and informal, that emerge from the encounters between two nations. Using materials that bridge tradition and popular culture, his works tell stories about the pasts and futures of people with two homelands.

ABOUT THE WORK:

Sarabia’s series of ceramic sculptural works are based on talavera design, a traditional Mexican pattern used in pottery. In contrast with these delicate designs, the ceramics incorporate contemporary images of sex, drugs, and violence in order to comment on a Mexican subculture which is often shyed away from. Functioning as symbols within an illegal exchange of goods, the works frame the idea of smuggling as an entrepreneurial means to cross a border.
